PARADIGM SHIFT?

I will begin by thanking DQ (DanQuarterly) for such a warm introduction to the blog. I doubt that I would have gotten involved in this type of thing with had it been with anyone else. We don’t agree on anything – in fact, we’re basically polar opposites - but that doesn’t change the fact that I respect all of his views, because to put it bluntly: he knows what he is talking about. Okay, enough of my foreword, it is time to piss DQ off…

Now on to business:

What happened during this weekend’s divisional round of the NFL playoffs completely redefined my image of the quarterback position. In fact, I’m over it and done with it. PERIOD.

Go ahead and take your pre-snap read quarterbacks and guys that can adjust to the blitz with a perfect “three-yard speed out” audible at the line of scrimmage. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, etc… look great. They are poised, eloquent, and make the perfect read every time they drop back to pass. But the perfect read doesn’t say to throw a 50 yard bomb to your rookie wide receiver on 3rd and 19. The perfect read says to take what the defense gives you, pick up 12 yards and look to swing field position on a punt so that you have a chance to get the ball back and kick the winning field goal as time expires.

That is the difference. And that is what I am completely over. Those guys no longer interest me because I am finally able to come to terms with what I believe defines the position: Getting it done.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am talking about Ben Roethlisberger. I am a Steeler fan and that probably has a lot to do with my favorable view of Roethlisberger, but after watching all of these quarterbacks play this weekend, I am convinced that Ben is the quarterback I would want leading my team. Put conventional wisdom aside and stop considering whose footwork looks the best as he drops back to pass, that isn’t what makes a quarterback the best in the business.

Ladies and Gentleman, this position has officially changed in my eyes, let me know what yours see…
