This blog (currently Quarterly Sports) is for anybody who will give us the time of day.
Let me introduce myself: My name is Danny Massaro and I am nothing more than another twenty-something with no exciting hobbies. I've never been skydiving, I don't hunt or fish, nor do I collect or build model cars. What I do do is spend the better part of my day - and life to this point - watching, reading about, analyzing, and trying to play sports. I was born and raised 50 miles north of Pittsburgh to a father who would take a bullet for Levon Kirkland or any man to ever play for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and to a mother who, after 15 years of me playing football, still does not know the difference between offense and defense. I guess somewhere in conception I attained both of those genes which would make me the Cleveland sports enthusiast I am today.
Some people would consider me a contrarian when I discuss sports and voice my opinion because I don't often agree with the masses. That is to my advantage and disadvantage. While I insist that the New York Giants will win the Super Bowl every year, I am wrong often - but was once correct (and will be again soon). In the same vein of NFL/NFC football talk, I think that the next ten or so years will be headlined by Aaron Rodgers and Josh Freeman battles to decide the National Football Conference's Super Bowl representative... with a side of Matty Ice and Sam Bradford. As a boy my favorite baseball players were Omar Vizquel and Willie Mays Hayes. As an adult, my favorite baseball players remain Vizquel and Wesley Snipes.
To round out the sparknotes version of who I am I'll say that I am very opinionated, though those opinions are usually laughed at. I am not a stat guy nor am I a win guy, I am a "watch and see" guy. I don't consider Kobe better than Lebron because Kobe has "won" titles. Kobe has not won titles... the Lakers have. Michael Phelps and Steffi Graf won titles; in team sports players don't solidify iconic status solely because they have won. When I was young, I grounded out with two men in scoring position of a little league game to make the last out. I cried myself to sleep that night. The next morning my dad used the old adage "no one play dictates the outcome of a game." I don't agree with no one play dictating the outcome but I agree that no one player does... unless his name is Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
Enough about me. If you are crazy enough to continually (or even sporadically) read this blog, you will get to know me even more. My co-blogger will be Jim Blundo. My introduction of Blundo won't be as wordy as mine but I will give you what you should know about Blundo and he can fill you in with the rest.
Blundo spends more time researching the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system than he does selling dental insurance as a profession. He was the third overall pick of our wiffleball league draft back in junior high and then went on to win four straight batting titles. The kid could hit a curveball. His Steelers fandom can only be matched by school lunch ladies (you know that your's were wearing Alan Faneca jerseys on Fridays) and he'd rather be thrown into a pool of sharks than watch an NBA game. All in all, Jim Blundo knows what he is talking about. I recommend you read and find that out for yourself.
That is that. That is who we are. This is what we'll do: We will blog about whatever we feel is blog-worthy. If Blake Griffin shatters the backboard, if Barack Obama picks a perfect or imperfect Final Four, and if the Steelers win the Super Bowl (attempted jinx) - chances are that we will have something to say.
There most likely will be guest blogs from our friends. And we would love to hear what all of you (saying that more than our parents read) think and have to say. Our e-mail address is JDQuarterly@gmail.com and you can also follow us on Twitter (@JimQuarterly and @DanQuarterly... I stole his name - my bad).
As I said before - I don't have too many hobbies. But two things that I love are sports and writing, and through our attempt to combine the two I hope that you pick up a new hobby yourself: Reading this nonsense.
